What should I do with my life? [29 Dec 2009|10:01pm]

"What should I do with my life?" - I'm trying to find a book that helps me answer that question. Any suggestions?

I started Po Bronson's book with that title years ago, but I felt like he was being condescending and judgmental toward his subjects, so I didn't make it past the first few chapters. (Anyone else feel this way? Or should I give it another shot?)

I also have "What Color Is My Parachute?" but it's pretty annoying and useless. Plus, it focuses on the nitty-gritty (e.g. how to get your resume in the door) but I want something more macro - like zeroing in on what would actually make for a rewarding career.

Part how-to, part motivational - but nothing too self-helpy that would ruin my hipster cred. Let me know your thoughts.

I'm looking for novels that take place near or on the sea.
Besides The Sea, The Old Man and the Sea and The Sea, The Sea.

thx.

Merry Christmas, all! I have an odd request.

I got a Kindle for Christmas, but I'm not sure which books are available for it. What are the best books you know of that are available on the Kindle?

I love contemporary poetry (actually, any poetry really) and I'm interested in (but not limited to) reading new fiction. My favorite books include The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers, Reasons to Live by Amy Hempel, and Quicksand by Tanizaki Junichiro.

Puh-leeze do not mistake this for one of those scientifically produced, computer algorithm-culled, 'Best Of 2009' lists that you see in comics curious magazines like Newsweek and Wizard. This is purely the product of one seriously scatterbrained blogger who has been obsessing over funnybooks for far too long, yet still feels woefully behind in his reading. (Hell, truth be told, most of these books came out pre-2009!) The only criteria for inclusion in this list was this: Out of every comic I curled up with, huddled over, and ate my favorite meals with in the past twelve months, which ones do I still think of most? Yesterday, Jerry "Tycho" Holkins had some interesting things to say on the Penny Arcade blog about the Kindle, the new Nook, and the nature of electronic book selling and file sharing. If it's all right, I'll include his comments under the cut.
